Dutch defeat Cubans 2-0

Maarten Van Garderen, Netherlands – “Just like yesterday, just like we do everyday I guess, we pulled that one out.  We don’t think about anything but the score.  In blocking and defense we had less grip than our opponent, and the Cubans made some good sideouts.  In important moments we made good serves and we kept them under pressure.  I think that’s part of staying aggressive and focused.  I’m very proud of how we cope with these situations.  Without him, we couldn’t have been where we are now.  It’s been hard for him to take a step back.  He spent a lot of energy on our new partnership.  I have a lot of respect with how he is dealing with the situation.  In the past we lost some matches bad and I was struggling playing in the sand and he kept being positive and that made a huge difference.  It’s kind of crazy that after two and half months we are playing like this in the World Championships.”

Christiaan Varnehorst, Netherlands – “I had a little bit of fallback, but fortunately he (Van Garderen) stepped up and he helped me out there.  I found my game back.  We had a strong finish against, same as yesterday.  I think it shows character that we have, to bounce back.  He gave us the win 2-0.  (On providing insight to his younger partner) It’s mostly coaching staff telling us what are the preparations and what we can do on the rest days.  I’m only on court communicating with him specifically about the game plan.  The coaches are doing a fantastic job; he is picking it up so fast, it’s unbelievable.”

Daisel Quesada, Cuba – “In the second set we had a problem with our communication.  The wind was good, it was no problem.”
