Dutch 2013 world champions win opening 2017 world championship match

Alexander Brouwer, Netherlands – “It wasn’t exactly how we wanted to play our first match.  We wanted to put all of our skills out on the court today but that didn’t really work out.  But I am really happy that we won 2-0 and fought back in the second set after having a difficult time.  We weren’t playing as neat as we normally do.  Of course it was some windy circumstances but normally as Dutch we have everything under control in reception and setting but today was a bit sloppy.”

Robert Meeuwser, Netherlands – “We made some mistakes by ourselves but they played well.  Of course it’s their first time and they were playing with everything they had to see how far they could come.  They did really well and played nice.  We made a bit too many errors and we made it too difficult for ourselves.  We haven’t played many games the past month so we need to find a rhythm.  We won so that’s the most important thing.”

Marco Cairus, Uruguay – “We are really excited to be here.  We were expecting a big difference in the level of play but in that second set we were really close.  We just made some small mistakes and had a lack of experience.”

Mauricio Vieyto, Uruguay – “This is a big venue and big championship.  We are really motivated and excited to play.
