News 29/03/2017 Vienna beams with excitement for Beach Volleyball World Championships Lausanne, Switzerland, March 29, 2017 – The Austrian capital of Vienna will be the world capital for beach volleyball for 10 days, when the city hosts its first ever FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships from July 28 to August 6.It will be the first time capital city Vienna hosts an event, but Austria has hosted 18 men's and 15 women's FIVB World Tour events over the years with Klagenfurt regularly welcoming the world's top teams.Last year, Klagenfurt hosted an FIVB Beach Volleyball Major, where Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia won the men’s title, and Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany bagged the women’s title.The 11th edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Vienna will feature 96 teams vying for the titles of the double-gender event offering a $1 million prize purse.The state-of-the art Vienna Centre Court at Donauinsel will be the focal point of the action and entertainment alongside a picturesque view of the Danube River and the lively atmosphere of the FIVB Beach Village.Brazil are arguably the nation to beat with a hefty lead in the medal count in both genders of the FIVB World Tour events in Austria – the men have collected 26 medals, while the women tallied 18 medals.Brazilian pairs Alison Cerrutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas also claimed gold at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Netherlands 2015.
